A World of Disputed Territories

• By: André Munro

Antarctica: A number of countries, including United Kingdom, France, and Argentina, have made claims over frozen continent of Antarctica, but these claims have not been recognized by international community since signature of Antarctica Treaty in 1959. treaty forbade countries from taking possession of any part of Antarctica with these solemn words: "in interest of all mankind that Antarctica shall continue forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and shall not become scene or object of international discord.” Some experts believe discovery of precious natural resources could change equation and revive countries’ claims to Antarctica. No word yet on a penguin independence movement.

Israel/Palestine: Impossible to ignore, Israel-Palestine conflict is a source of insecurity for Middle East and for world at large.

Taiwan: After Japanese defeat in World War II, island of Taiwan reverted to China. Chinese government itself, however, was soon overthrown on mainland by People’s Liberation Army of Mao Zedong, and new communist state took name People’s Republic of China. nationalist government of Chiang Kai-shek went into exile on island, which it continued to rule as Republic of China (ROC). While People’s Republic of China claims sovereignty over “rogue province” of Taiwan, ROC still regards itself as legitimate government of China on both sides of Taiwan Strait.

Kuril Islands: Dispute over this volcano-intensive archipelago of 56 islands is primary reason Japan and Russia have never signed a peace treaty to formalize end of World War II. At end of war, Soviet Union invaded Kuril Islands, some of which Imperial Russia had previously controlled. While transfer of islands to Soviet Union was included in Yalta agreements, Japan continued to claim historical rights to southernmost islands.

Occupied territories of Georgia: are territories occupied by Russia after Russo-Georgian War in 2008. They consist of regions of Abkhazia and former South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast, whose status is a matter of international dispute. Russia does not allow European Union Monitoring Mission to enter either Abkhazia or South Ossetia.

After a 2008 " five-day war " with Georgia, Russia also now effectively controls Abkhazia and South Ossetia, two regions that once were firmly considered part of Georgia.

Transdniestria: proclaimed independence from Moldova and allegiance to Moscow in early 1990s and has been considered a " frozen conflict " ever since, but with an ongoing Russian military presence there.

Crimea: Recent military occupation by Russian forces and subsequent referendum to join Russia has been condemned by many world leaders as illegitimate. Germany's Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier went so far as to say Russia has "opened a Pandora's box" with its swift and widely condemned annexation of Crimea. China abstained from voting on a UN Security Council draft resolution that would have condemned referendum in Crimea as illegal. (A UN General Assembly vote on March 27 condemned occupation by 100 to 11, with 58 abstentions.) But "Crimea is concerning because it sets a precedent for what international system will bear," says Jeffrey Mankoff, deputy director of Russia and Eurasia program at Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. "There is concern that China, for instance, may take [Russia's annexation of Crimea] as a lesson" it will apply to some of its own territorial disputes: that international consequences of violating borders might not be as severe as once thought. - NationalGeographic.com

Meanwhile, along Russia-Ukraine border, Luhansk and Donetsk regions are marred in conflict as separatists try to take control. As of December, Russia has said that it doesn't want to absorb these "states" into Russia itself, preferring instead that they become autonomous regions within Ukraine. - IO9.gizmodo.com

17.07.11 BNN-news.com Stoltenberg: NATO is on Ukraine’s side and will not recognise Crimea annexation into Russia: NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a visit to Ukraine stressed that in the war-torn east of the country, Minsk agreements «must be fully implemented and OSCE monitors be granted full, safe and unhindered access to the whole of Ukraine».

Four, Putin wants to be seen as a historical figure who returned Russia’s allegedly deserved glory. Nobody would argue with this if it meant making country an economically blossoming state with strong democratic rules that are obeyed. This is something Putin could have tried to bring to his country during his nearly 20-year rule, but he did not. Unfortunately for Moscow, it means that world needs to be afraid of Russia—that’s what Kremlin believes respect is. We simply are in a zero-sum game. If Russia bullies countries in Eastern Europe, it doesn’t get friendship or love, but resistance and disdain.
If West wants to satisfy Putin’s demands, it cannot do so without handing over things we hold dear: state sovereignty, right of any nation to choose its own path despite wishes of its bigger neighbor, and freedom of speech. Those are things that have made America great, and you cannot make it great again if you give up on values that are cornerstone of current Western world. Because, yes, things can get much worse, just as they did after 1938 when Western leaders made some really bad decisions.

Old preconceptions and terms must be challenged in order to have an accurate view of present international situation. Today’s Russian Federation is a vastly different state - socially, politically, economically and militarily - from Union of Soviet Socialist Republics of even 27 years ago. But US military expenditures are estimated at 36 percent to almost 50 percent of total global military expenditures. Russia's expenditures are 4 to 5 percent of global total. There is an insatiable drive to control Russia's great wealth by largest banks and corporations. Economic sanctions imposed by U.S. and EU at this time were specifically designed to hit Russia in its energy sector, where country is most vulnerable...

Explained: Ukraine’s Case Against RF at Hague. Analyzing evidence presented by Ukraine accusing of supporting “terrorism” Ukraine claims that Russia bears responsibility for these acts of “terrorism” in Donbas through its funding, outfitting, and support of separatist forces. Seven civilians died and more than thirty were injured after Russia-backed separatist forces carried out a bombardment of Kramatorsk on February 10, 2015. An investigation from International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR) found that thirty-two projectiles were fired from four Smerch systems from separatist-controlled territory. Many of other claims made by Russian representatives are absurd when we consider available open source information, especially claim that Russia has not provided weapons or funds to separatist forces.

Настанет год – России черный год – Когда царей корона упадет, Забудет червь к ним прежнюю любовь,
И пища многих будет смерть и кровь; Когда детей, когда невинных жен Низвергнутый не защитит закон;
Когда чума от смрадных, мертвых тел Начнет бродить среди печальных сел, Чтобы платком из хижин вызывать;
